The Face of Repentance

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

Daniel 9:3-5

I turned to the Lord God, pleading in earnest prayer, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed, saying, “Lord, great and awesome God, you who keep your merciful covenant toward those who love you and keep your commandments! We have sinned, been wicked and done evil; we have rebelled and departed from your commandments and your laws.”

Grace Prayed For

I pray for the grace of Sincere Contrition—that I may honestly acknowledge my failings while keeping my eyes fixed on God’s “merciful covenant.”

Reflection

Daniel’s prayer is not a groveling of despair, but an “earnest pleading” based on God’s character. He turns his face toward God to confess. This is the key to Lenten intimacy: we don’t look at our sins in a vacuum; we look at them in the light of God’s “awesome” mercy. When we confess, we aren’t telling God something He doesn’t know; we are clearing the debris that blocks our view of Him.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
