Embracing Your Charisms: A Reflection on 1 Peter 2:4-10

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

1 Peter 2:4-10

Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it says in scripture: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.” Therefore, for you who believe, its value is precious. But for those who do not believe, “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” and “A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall.” They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. But you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were “no people” but now you are God’s people; you “had not received mercy” but now you have received mercy.

Grace Prayed For

This scripture passage prompts us to pray for the grace to fully embrace our identity as God’s beloved, a chosen race and royal priesthood, so that we may confidently and joyfully live out our unique charisms in every encounter, announcing His praises to the world.

Reflection

Let these words from Peter truly sink into the depths of your heart. Imagine yourself drawing near to Jesus, the “living stone,” not as someone needing to earn His affection, but as one already cherished, deeply loved. He chose you, He sees you as precious, even when the world might overlook or reject you. In His eyes, you are magnificent.

Now, consider this incredible truth: you, along with all who believe, are being built into a “spiritual house,” a holy priesthood. This isn’t just a metaphor; it’s your very identity in Him. You are a “living stone,” unique and essential, placed precisely where you belong in His grand design. What does it mean to be a “royal priesthood”? It means you have direct access to the Father through Jesus, and you are empowered to offer “spiritual sacrifices”—not animals or grain, but your prayers, your acts of love, your very life offered in obedience and worship. This is where your charisms, the beautiful gifts of grace given to you at Baptism, come alive. Perhaps you have a charism of hospitality, making others feel seen and welcomed, just as Jesus welcomes you. Maybe it’s encouragement, speaking words of life and hope into weary hearts. It could be compassion, suffering with those who suffer, or teaching, sharing the truth with clarity and love.

These aren’t merely talents; they are divine expressions of His love working through you. As you embrace your identity as His beloved, understanding that you are chosen, precious, and a part of His royal priesthood, these charisms naturally begin to shine forth. You don’t have to strive or force them. Your intimacy with Jesus ignites them. When you encounter someone, whether a stranger or a friend, imagine yourself radiating His love because you are so immersed in it. Your charisms become the very conduits of that love. If you have the charism of mercy, you’ll naturally offer understanding instead of judgment. If it’s faith, your unwavering trust in God will inspire others. Evangelization then becomes less about structured presentations and more about simply being who you are in Christ, allowing His light, His love, and His specific gifts within you to touch the hearts of those you meet. You are “a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of Him. Your very life, lived in the beautiful truth of His love and empowered by your charisms, becomes a living proclamation of His goodness, drawing others out of darkness into His wonderful light.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
