A Father’s Promise, a Son’s Salvation, a Spirit’s Song

Scripture Passage

Lk 1:67-79

Zechariah his father, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied, saying:     “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;  for he has come to his people and set them free.  He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. Through his prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers
and to remember his holy covenant.  This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham:  to set us free from the hand of our enemies, free to worship him without fear, holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, to give his people knowledge of salvation by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Grace Prayed For

Openness to the Holy Spirit: Zechariah’s prophecy was inspired by the Holy Spirit. We can pray for a greater openness to the Spirit’s guidance and inspiration in our own lives, allowing Him to illuminate our minds and hearts with God’s truth.

Reflection

In the hushed anticipation of Advent, we are drawn to Zechariah’s prophetic song, a hymn of praise that erupts from a heart overflowing with the Holy Spirit. His words, inspired by divine revelation, paint a vivid picture of God’s redemptive plan and the Trinitarian dance that brings it to fruition.

Zechariah proclaims, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and set them free.” This declaration resonates with the Father’s initiative in salvation history. He is the one who has “raised up for us a mighty Savior,” fulfilling the ancient promises made through the prophets.

This Savior, born of the house of David, is none other than Jesus, the Son of God. Zechariah’s prophecy highlights Jesus’ role as the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham, the one who sets us free from the “hand of our enemies” – sin, death, and despair.

But it is through the Holy Spirit that this salvation becomes a reality. Zechariah, “filled with the Holy Spirit,” speaks these prophetic words. The Spirit illuminates his understanding, enabling him to see the profound significance of his son’s birth and its connection to the coming Messiah.

This Trinitarian tapestry woven through Zechariah’s song invites us to deeper reflection this Advent:

  • The Father’s loving initiative: God the Father, out of His boundless love, takes the initiative to redeem His people. He sends His Son, not to condemn, but to save.
  • The Son’s obedient sacrifice: Jesus, the promised Savior, willingly embraces His mission to set us free. He offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, breaking the chains of sin and death.
  • The Spirit’s illuminating power: The Holy Spirit reveals the truth of God’s plan and empowers us to receive its benefits. He guides us into a deeper understanding of salvation and opens our hearts to receive Christ.

As we prepare for Christmas, let us ponder these Trinitarian truths:

  • Gratitude: Let us give thanks for the Father’s love, the Son’s sacrifice, and the Spirit’s guidance.
  • Hope: Let us embrace the hope that Zechariah’s prophecy offers, a hope rooted in God’s faithfulness and the promise of salvation.
  • Transformation: Let us allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate our hearts, guiding us into the “way of peace” and preparing us to receive Christ anew.

This Advent, may Zechariah’s song be our prayer, a song of praise and anticipation that draws us closer to the heart of the Trinity and the wonder of Christmas.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

Walking the path of peace: The prophecy speaks of God guiding our feet into the way of peace. This peace is found in a relationship with Jesus. As we draw closer to him, we can experience a deeper sense of inner peace that transcends circumstances and anxieties.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
