A Pure Speech: Preparing the Heart for the King
“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

Zephaniah 3:1-2, 9-13
Woe to the city, rebellious and polluted, to the oppressor! She hears no voice, accepts no correction; in the LORD she has not trusted, to her God she has not drawn near. For then I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD, and serve him with one accord. From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia shall my suppliants, my dispersed people, bring me offerings. On that day you shall not be put to shame for any of your deeds, when you rebelled against me; for then I will remove from your midst your proudly exultant foes, and you shall no longer be haughty on my holy mountain. But I will leave in your midst a people humble and lowly, who shall take refuge in the name of the LORD: the remnant of Israel. They shall do no wrong and speak no lies; nor shall there be found in their mouths a deceitful tongue; they shall be able to pasture and lie down without anyone to disquiet them.
Grace Prayed For
The grace of radical humility and purification, enabling me to silence my inner rebellion and allow the Holy Spirit to transform my “speech” and heart into a humble and lowly dwelling ready to receive the Prince of Peace.
Reflection
“Woe to the city, rebellious and polluted…” That city is not just Jerusalem; it is the unsettled and distracted landscape of my own soul when I fail to listen to the voice of the Spirit, when I refuse the correction of conscience, and when I let my anxieties replace my trust in God. The first steps of Advent vigilance are to listen and draw near. I cannot prepare the way for Jesus if I am stubbornly deaf to the gentle, persistent invitations of the Father. My Trinitarian God desires an intimate home in me, but I must first remove the spiritual clutter of pride, deceit, and self-reliance that Zephaniah calls the “proudly exultant foes.”
Yet, the message does not end in judgment, but in the soaring promise of Hope. “I will change the speech of the peoples to a pure speech, that all of them may call upon the name of the LORD, and serve him with one accord.” This is the mission of the Incarnation! Jesus, the Word made flesh, is the pure speech—the ultimate communication of the Father’s love. When I open my heart to Him, the Holy Spirit begins the sacred work of purification, molding me into a “people humble and lowly,” who take refuge in His name.
This deep, intimate work with my God—my preparation—is not meant to stay private. When my heart is quieted, humble, and truthful, the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit cannot help but shine forth. Jesus has loved me so completely that He emptied Himself for me. This transformative love, received in silence and humility, makes me a living witness to His coming. The “pure speech” becomes the truth and love that flows from me in every encounter. This is the Advent mission: to let the world see what a pure heart looks like, to courageously testify that the King has come, and His presence brings a peace where one can “pasture and lie down without anyone to disquiet them.” I am called to join the Lord in restoring His creation by simply letting His restored life shine through me.
Daily Evangelization and Baptismal Mission
This simple act witnesses to the value of the other person and proclaims that God’s time is present now (vigilance) and that trust is more important than control (letting them have the floor). I am showing them, without words, the humility Jesus showed me.

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
