Today’s Theme for Prayer – God Chooses to Make Me

Psalm 139:2-18

LORD, you have probed me, you know me: you know when I sit and stand; you understand my thoughts from afar. You sift through my travels and my rest; with all my ways you are familiar. Even before a word is on my tongue, LORD, you know it all. Behind and before you encircle me and rest your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, far too lofty for me to reach. Where can I go from your spirit? From your presence, where can I flee? If I ascend to the heavens, you are there; if I lie down in Sheol, there you are. If I take the wings of dawn and dwell beyond the sea, Even there your hand guides me, your right hand holds me fast.  If I say, “Surly darkness shall hide me, and night shall be my light”  Darkness is not dark for you, and night shines as the day. Darkness and light are but one. You formed my inmost being;  you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works!  My very self you know. My bones are not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me unformed; in your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be. How precious to me are your designs, O God; how vast the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the sands; when I complete them, still you are with me.

Grace Prayed For

Gratitude: The psalm evokes a sense of awe and wonder at God’s intimate knowledge and constant presence. Pray for the grace to cultivate a deep and abiding gratitude for this incredible love and care.

The Intimate Gaze of God: Known and Loved

This passage from Psalm 139 is a powerful and comforting reminder of God’s intimate knowledge and constant presence in our lives. It evokes a sense of awe and wonder at God’s omniscience and omnipresence, while also highlighting the unique and precious nature of each individual.

Key takeaways:

  • God’s all-encompassing knowledge: The psalmist emphasizes that God knows us completely – our actions, our thoughts, and even our words before we speak them. This knowledge is not superficial but extends to the very depths of our being.
  • God’s constant presence: No matter where we go or what we do, God is with us. We cannot escape God’s presence, even if we ascend to the heavens or descend to the depths of the earth. This presence is a source of comfort and security, knowing that we are never truly alone.
  • The wonder of creation: The psalmist marvels at the way God formed them in their mother’s womb, highlighting the intricate and beautiful design of the human body. This recognition leads to praise and thanksgiving for the gift of life.
  • The value of the individual: The passage emphasizes that each person is unique and precious in God’s eyes. Our days were planned before we were even born, and God has a purpose for each of us. This knowledge can give us a sense of meaning and direction in life.

Reflection:

This psalm invites us to reflect on our own relationship with God. Do we truly believe that God knows us intimately and loves us unconditionally? Do we trust in God’s presence, even in the midst of darkness and difficulty? Do we appreciate the wonder of our own creation and the unique gifts that God has given us?

As we meditate on these truths, we can find comfort, strength, and inspiration. We can rest assured that we are never alone, that we are deeply loved, and that our lives have meaning and purpose. We can also be inspired to live our lives in a way that honors God and reflects God’s love to the world.

Call to action:

Take some time today to reflect on this passage and its message. Consider how you can deepen your relationship with God and live more fully into the unique purpose that God has for you.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

“Where can I go from your Spirit? From your presence, where can I flee?” This reminds us that Jesus is always with us. Cultivate an awareness of His presence throughout your day. Talk to Him, share your thoughts and feelings, and invite Him into every moment.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
