The Eternal Rock and the Open Gate

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

Isaiah 26:1-6

In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah: “We have a strong city; he sets up salvation as walls and ramparts. Open the gates! Let a righteous nation enter, one that keeps faith. A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace; in peace, for its trust in you. Trust in the LORD forever! For the LORD is an eternal Rock. For he has humbled the inhabitants of the heights, the lofty city, bringing it down. He brings it down to the ground, lays it in the dust. The foot tramples it, the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy.”

Grace Prayed For

The grace to trust in the LORD forever; to possess a firm purpose (a steadfast will) rooted in God’s love, that keeps my soul in peace and allows me to welcome Jesus into the humble ground of my heart.

Reflection

Look at the image this Scripture paints: a strong city whose very walls are Salvation itself. This city isn’t built by human hands alone; it’s a gift from the LORD, an eternal Rock where true, unwavering peace resides. This is the dwelling place, the sanctuary, you have prepared for me, Your child, who simply desires to keep faith.

But notice the command: “Open the gates!” The gates are not opened by a conquering army, but by You, my Trinitarian God, to welcome a righteous nation, one that keeps faith. This Advent, the gate is my own heart. The vigilance I must practice is keeping that gate open, preparing a space within my soul—not a high and lofty fortress of self-reliance, but a humbled, welcoming ground where the “feet of the poor, the steps of the needy” (which includes the most needy part of my own soul) can tread.

You, Jesus, have humbled Yourself to live among us, to be our very Peace. Because You first trusted the Father, because You loved me enough to enter the dust of my humanity, I can now trust You completely. This perfect love casts out all fear. It is this firm purpose in Your love, this rock-solid hope, that radiates out from me. When I surrender my anxiety and ambition—the “lofty city” of my ego—and simply rest in Your peace, Your light shines forth. My mission, then, is not to build a new city, but to testify with my whole life that the gates of Your city, Your Kingdom, are open right now, inviting everyone to trust in the eternal Rock and find true, lasting peace.

Daily Evangelization and Baptismal Mission

In Justice/Righteousness: Prepare the way for the poor and the needy (Isaiah 26:6) by advocating for or serving those in genuine need. This prepares the ground not just for them, but for the Lord’s presence in our community. This is a courageous witness to hope that proclaims God’s justice.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
