Mathew 1:18-25

Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the Holy Spirit.  Joseph, her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. j Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

Grace Prayed For

Openness to Miracles: Maybe you feel stuck in a routine or long for something extraordinary. You could pray for the grace to be more open to miracles, recognizing the possibility of God’s presence in the ordinary moments of your life.

A Reflection on Faith, Trust and Unexpected Miracles

The story of Jesus’ birth, as recounted in Matthew’s Gospel, is a tapestry woven with faith, trust, and the promise of unexpected miracles. Here’s how this passage can inspire us:

  • Faith in the Face of Uncertainty: Mary’s situation is challenging. Betrothed to Joseph, she finds herself pregnant through the Holy Spirit. This defies societal norms and could bring shame. Yet, Mary exhibits unwavering faith, trusting in God’s plan even when it seems impossible. We too can find strength in faith, believing that God has a purpose for our lives, even when the path is unclear.

  • Trust and Obedience: Joseph, a righteous man, wrestles with a difficult decision. He doesn’t want to shame Mary, yet the situation is beyond his understanding. However, through a dream, God intervenes. Joseph’s response is one of complete trust and obedience. He listens to the angel’s message and takes Mary into his home, even though it disrupts his plans. This teaches us the importance of listening for God’s guidance and following through with faith, even when it requires sacrifice.

  • Miracles in the Ordinary: The birth of Jesus takes place not in a palace, but in a humble setting. God chooses to enter the world through an ordinary couple facing extraordinary circumstances. This reminds us that God works in unexpected ways. Miracles don’t have to be grand gestures; they can unfold in the quiet moments of our lives. We are called to be open to the possibility of God’s presence in our everyday experiences.

  • A Promise Fulfilled: The passage references the prophecy of Isaiah, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means “God is with us.” Jesus’ birth signifies the fulfillment of this promise. It is a powerful reminder that God keeps His word and remains faithful to His people. We can find comfort in this truth, knowing that God’s promises hold true for us as well.

How can we apply this to our lives?

  • When faced with challenges, hold onto faith, trusting that God has a plan.
  • Develop a posture of listening and be open to God’s guidance.
  • Recognize the potential for miracles in the ordinary moments of your life.
  • Find comfort in the knowledge that God’s promises are true.

By reflecting on the story of Jesus’ birth, we can cultivate a deeper faith, trust in God’s will, and an openness to the miracles that unfold around us. This, in turn, strengthens our connection with the Divine and paves the way for a more meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

Following the Example of Joseph and Mary: Both Joseph and Mary faced challenges yet responded with faith and obedience. Joseph’s trust in the angel’s message and Mary’s willingness to surrender to God’s will are qualities worth emulating. By following their example, you can cultivate a closer relationship with Jesus, who himself embodied these same qualities.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
