Luke 7:36-50

Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that he was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment, she stood behind him at his feet weeping and began to bathe his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.”  Jesus said to him in reply, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. “Two people were in debt to a certain creditor; one owed five hundred days’ wages* and the other owed fifty.  Since they were unable to repay the debt, he forgave it for both. Which of them will love him more?”  Simon said in reply, “The one, I suppose, whose larger debt was forgiven.” He said to him, “You have judged rightly.”  Then he turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? When I entered your house, you did not give me water for my feet, but she bathed them with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but she has not ceased kissing my feet since the time I entered.  You did not anoint my head with oil, but she anointed my feet with ointment.  So I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; hence, she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little.” He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”  The others at table said to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” But he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”

Grace Prayed For

Pray for the grace to see others not through judgmental lenses, but with compassion, like Jesus saw the unnamed woman. Ask God to remove any prejudices you may hold and to replace them with understanding and empathy.

Love Overflowing: A Reflection on Luke 7:36-50

This story in Luke 7:36-50 is a beautiful tapestry woven with threads of forgiveness, love, and the transformative power of faith. Here’s how it can inspire us:

  • Unconditional Love vs. Judgment: We see the stark contrast between the unnamed woman’s extravagant act of love and the Pharisee’s cold judgment. The woman, labeled a “sinner,” pours out her heart in gratitude, while the seemingly “righteous” Simon offers nothing but criticism. This reminds us that true faith manifests in love, not outward appearances.
  • Forgiveness Breeds Love: Jesus’ parable of the debtors highlights a profound truth: the greater the forgiveness received, the deeper the love expressed. The woman, burdened by a heavy debt of sin, overflows with love upon receiving forgiveness. This reminds us that God’s forgiveness is a gift that awakens a response of love within us.
  • Simple Acts of Love Matter: The woman’s actions, though seemingly insignificant – tears, hair, kisses, and ointment – are deeply meaningful to Jesus. It reminds us that grand gestures aren’t necessary. Our expressions of love, however simple, can touch the heart of God.
  • Faith is the Key: While the Pharisees question Jesus’ authority to forgive sins, Jesus assures the woman, “Your faith has saved you.” This reminds us that faith is the bridge between us and God’s grace. It’s through faith that we receive forgiveness and experience the transforming power of God’s love.

How can we apply this to our lives?

  • Examine our hearts: Do we judge others or offer compassion?
  • Seek forgiveness: Approach God with a repentant heart, knowing He offers abundant forgiveness.
  • Express love: Let gratitude for God’s grace overflow in acts of love, big or small.
  • Live in faith: Strengthen your faith through prayer, study, and living a life that reflects God’s love.

This story is a powerful reminder that God’s love and forgiveness are for everyone, regardless of our past. It inspires us to live with open hearts, overflowing with love and gratitude, just like the unnamed woman in this beautiful passage.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

The story highlights the connection between forgiveness and love. As the woman experiences forgiveness, her love for Jesus overflows. By understanding forgiveness as a gift that deepens your connection with Jesus, you can approach Him with greater openness and vulnerability, strengthening your intimacy.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
