From Resurrection to Commission: Your Role in God’s Plan

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”
Luke 24:46-53

He said to them, “Thus it is written that the Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.” Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy. They were continually in the temple praising God.

Grace Prayed For

The grace to boldly embrace the call to witness to the resurrection and to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to guide and equip us in fulfilling the Great Commission.

Reflection

Imagine standing there with the disciples, still reeling from the unbelievable reality of Jesus’ resurrection. He appears before you, not as a ghost, but in flesh and blood, bearing the scars that testify to his immense sacrifice. And then, with a clarity that pierces through all doubt and fear, he reveals the divine plan – his suffering, his rising, and now, your role in carrying this transformative message to the ends of the earth. His words, “You are witnesses of these things,” are not just directed to those first followers, but to you, right here, right now. This resurrected Jesus, who conquered death itself, now commissions you. Feel the weight and the wonder of this calling. He doesn’t leave you unprepared though. He promises the very power of God will envelop you, strengthen you, and guide you as you step out in faith. This isn’t a task to be undertaken in your own strength, but in the overflowing power of the Holy Spirit. The joy the disciples felt upon witnessing his ascension wasn’t just about his glorious departure, but the profound realization that they were now equipped, empowered, and entrusted with the most important mission in history. The same joy awaits you as you embrace your role in this ongoing story of redemption.

Growing in Intimacy/Union with Jesus

This passage reveals Jesus’ profound trust in humanity by entrusting his followers, including us, with the mission of spreading the Good News. Knowing that the resurrected Christ specifically chose and empowered ordinary people to continue his work fosters a deep sense of connection and responsibility, drawing us closer to him as we strive to live out his command.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
