Beyond Myself: A Call to a Transformed Life

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

Phil 4:8-13

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. I know how to live in humble circumstances; I also know how to live with abundance. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well fed and going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.

Grace Prayed For

The scripture passage prompts us to pray for the grace to be rooted in Christ’s peace, which empowers us to live selflessly and to embrace our mission in all circumstances.

Reflection

This passage from Philippians invites us into a deeper reality, one that transcends our own limitations and desires. It’s a call to a life lived not by worldly standards, but by a divine measure—a measure of what is true, honorable, and just. This isn’t just a list of virtues to admire; it’s an invitation to a new way of thinking and being, a transformation that begins in the mind and flows into our actions. To “think about these things” is to align our hearts and minds with the very heart of God.

This internal shift is the wellspring of our external mission. When we are rooted in the peace of God, we find the strength to do all things, even those that seem impossible. St. Paul, who wrote these words from prison, models a profound truth: our circumstances do not define our capacity for mission. Whether in abundance or in need, we can live with a single purpose—to live for Christ, who empowers us. This is the essence of living “beyond ourselves.” It is no longer about our own comfort, security, or self-interest, but about being a vessel for His love and peace in the world. This intimate relationship with the Trinitarian God is what enables us to share His light with everyone we meet, because it is His strength, not our own, that accomplishes the work.

Announcing Jesus in Our Lives

Evangelizing in Day-to-Day Life

Evangelization isn’t just about public preaching; it’s about reflecting Christ in every encounter. You can evangelize in your day-to-day life by:

Offering a word of hope: When appropriate, share a brief word about your faith in a natural, non-preachy way. For example, “I’m praying for you” can open a door to a deeper conversation.

Practicing active listening: Truly hear others’ stories and show them they are valued. This simple act of presence can be a powerful witness to God’s love.

Showing genuine kindness: A smile, an encouraging word, or a small act of service can be a window to God’s grace.

Being a person of integrity: Live out the virtues mentioned in Philippians 4:8—be true, honorable, and just in all your dealings. Your actions can speak louder than words.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
