The Unshakeable Rock: Finding Hope in the Father’s Love

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”
Psalm 62

Only in God is my salvation; only in him, my hope. He is my rock, my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed at all. How long will you assail a man, all of you, to break him down, as though he were a leaning fence, a battered wall? They only plan to topple him from his height; they take delight in falsehood. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Only in God be quiet, my soul, for from him comes my hope. He is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be disturbed. In God is my safety and my glory, the rock of my strength; my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, O people! Pour out your hearts before him; God is our refuge! People are only a breath, mortals an illusion; if weighed in a balance, they are nothing; together they are lighter than a breath. Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth abound, set not your heart on it. Once God said, twice I heard this: that power belongs to God; to you, Lord, belongs mercy; and you render to everyone according to their deeds.

Grace Prayed For

The grace to cultivate an unwavering trust in God’s loving care and provision in all circumstances.

Reflection

Imagine yourself weary, perhaps feeling the weight of the world pressing down on you. The psalmist begins with a declaration of sole reliance: “Only in God is my salvation; only in him, my hope.” These are not just words; they are an anchor for the soul. When life feels like a “leaning fence, a battered wall,” threatened by the “assail” of difficulties and the “falsehood” of the world, where do we turn? The psalmist points us directly to the Father, the steadfast rock, the ultimate stronghold against all that would seek to disturb our peace.

This isn’t a distant God we encounter, but one in whom we can “be quiet,” pouring out our hearts like water before a trusted friend. The passage reminds us of the fleeting nature of earthly things – “People are only a breath, mortals an illusion.” Our true security and glory reside in the Father’s unwavering strength and mercy. He is not a God who delights in our downfall, but one who offers refuge. This psalm invites us to a radical trust: “Trust in him at all times, O people!” It’s a call to make this message the very rhythm of our hearts, so that in every encounter, whether joyful or challenging, the quiet assurance of the Father’s loving provision shines through us. Our mission, then, becomes to embody this trust, reflecting the Father’s love to a world desperately seeking such secure refuge.

Growing in Intimacy/Union with Jesus

Jesus, in his earthly ministry, perfectly exemplified this trust in the Father. He consistently sought the Father’s will, relied on His provision, and taught us to pray, “Our Father, who art in heaven…” By meditating on Psalm 62, we connect with the same spirit of dependence and love that defined Jesus’ relationship with the Father. We recognize Jesus as the ultimate manifestation of God’s loving provision for humanity, our rock and salvation made flesh. This understanding deepens our intimacy with Jesus as we strive to emulate his profound trust and filial love.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
