Luke 10:38-42

As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him.  She had a sister named Mary [who] sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me.” The Lord said to her in reply, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.  There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her.”

Grace Prayed For

The Grace of Stillness: Our world often prioritizes action. Pray for the grace to create space for stillness and quiet reflection in your life. Ask for the ability to be present in the moment and listen for God’s voice.

Choosing the Better Part: A Reflection on Luke 10:38-42

In the bustling world, where tasks pile up and responsibilities loom, the story of Martha and Mary in Luke 10:38-42 offers a gentle reminder about priorities and the importance of spiritual nourishment.

We meet Martha, a woman bustling with hospitality, eager to serve Jesus as he enters her home. Her sister, Mary, sits quietly at Jesus’ feet, absorbing his teachings. Martha, feeling overwhelmed by the preparations, approaches Jesus with a touch of frustration: “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving?” (v. 40).

Jesus’ response is both tender and insightful: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things” (v. 41). He acknowledges her diligence but gently redirects her focus. He reminds her, “There is need of only one thing” (v. 42). This “one thing” isn’t another serving dish or a perfectly prepared meal. It’s the opportunity to connect with the divine, to be still and listen to the wisdom being offered.

Mary, in her quiet attentiveness, has chosen “the better part” (v. 42). She understands that true nourishment comes not just from food, but from the spiritual sustenance Jesus offers. Her posture of receptivity allows her to learn and grow closer to God.

Reflection for Our Lives:

This story offers valuable lessons for our own journeys:

  • Discerning Priorities: In our busy lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the “many things” (v. 41). Martha’s story reminds us to discern what truly matters and prioritize nourishing our souls.
  • The Power of Stillness: In a world obsessed with doing, Mary’s act of simply sitting and listening is a powerful reminder of the importance of quiet reflection and receptivity.
  • Finding Spiritual Nourishment: Just as our bodies need food, our spirits crave nourishment. Seek out opportunities to connect with the divine, whether through prayer, meditation, or studying scripture.
  • Balance is Key: While Mary’s focus is admirable, neglecting practical responsibilities entirely isn’t the answer. The ideal lies in finding a balance between action and contemplation.

Growing Closer to the Lord:

This passage can guide you towards a deeper connection with God:

  • Examine Your Priorities: Reflect on your daily activities. Are you making space for spiritual growth and connection with God?
  • Practice Stillness: Carve out quiet time in your day for prayer, meditation, or simply reflecting on scripture. Allow yourself to be still and listen for God’s voice.
  • Seek Spiritual Sustenance: Engage in practices that nourish your soul. Explore different forms of prayer, attend religious services, or spend time in nature – find what connects you most deeply to the Divine.

May the story of Martha and Mary inspire you to find a balance between action and contemplation, to prioritize spiritual nourishment, and to cultivate a deeper, more intimate connection with the Lord.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

Embracing Stillness: Our world glorifies constant activity. Mary’s act of sitting at Jesus’ feet reminds us of the power of stillness. Schedule quiet time for prayer, meditation, or simply reflecting on scripture. In the quiet, you can listen for God’s voice and experience a deeper connection.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
