Beyond the World’s Enticement: A Christmas Meditation

Scripture Passage

1 Jn 2:12-17

I am writing to you, children, because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men,
because you have conquered the Evil One. I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men,
because you are strong and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the Evil One. Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, sensual lust, enticement for the eyes, and a pretentious life,
is not from the Father but is from the world. Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.

Grace Prayed For

Childlike Faith: Pray for the grace to approach Jesus with the trust and innocence of a child, believing in His unconditional love and forgiveness. Ask for a heart that is open to wonder and awe, especially during the Christmas season.

Reflection

The Apostle John, in his first letter, paints a beautiful and intimate portrait of the Christian life, particularly poignant during this Christmas season. He addresses different groups within the community – children, fathers, and young men – highlighting their unique strengths and reminding them of their shared identity in Christ.

Forgiveness and New Life:

“I am writing to you, children, because your sins have been forgiven for his name’s sake.”

Just as a child marvels at the wonder of Christmas, we are reminded of the incredible gift of forgiveness offered through Christ. In Him, we are made new, cleansed from the stain of sin, and offered a fresh start. This Christmas, let us embrace the childlike innocence that comes with knowing we are forgiven and loved unconditionally.

Wisdom and Legacy:

“I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning.”

The fathers, representing those with experience and wisdom, are called to remember the eternal nature of Christ. He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, let us reflect on the eternal significance of His coming and the legacy of faith we pass on to future generations.

Strength and Victory:

“I am writing to you, young men, because you are strong and the word of God remains in you, and you have conquered the Evil One.”

The young men, filled with strength and vigor, are reminded of their victory over evil through Christ. This Christmas, let us stand firm in our faith, resisting the temptations of the world and living lives that reflect the light of Christ within us.

A Call to Detachment:

“Do not love the world or the things of the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

John urges us to detach ourselves from the fleeting pleasures of the world. The true joy and fulfillment we seek are not found in material possessions or worldly pursuits but in a deep and abiding relationship with God. This Christmas, let us focus on the things that truly matter – love, compassion, and service to others.

Eternal Hope:

“Yet the world and its enticement are passing away. But whoever does the will of God remains forever.”

In the midst of the Christmas season, with its focus on gifts and celebrations, John reminds us of the eternal perspective. The things of this world will fade away, but our relationship with God and our commitment to His will endure forever. This Christmas, let us invest in the things that have eternal value, building a legacy of faith and love that will last for generations to come.

May this Christmas season be a time of renewed faith, deeper intimacy with Christ, and a joyful celebration of His birth. Let us embrace the message of John’s letter, living lives that reflect the love, forgiveness, and eternal hope we have found in Jesus Christ.

Growing in Intimacy with Jesus

Understanding the true meaning of detachment: John warns against loving the world and its fleeting pleasures. This Christmas season, as you’re surrounded by consumerism and distractions, consciously choose to prioritize your relationship with Jesus.

Serve others: Shift your focus outwards by volunteering your time or resources to those in need, reflecting Christ’s love and compassion.

Practice gratitude: Focus on the intangible gifts of love, joy, and peace that come from Christ, rather than material possessions.

Simplify your celebrations: Intentionally create space for prayer, reflection, and connecting with loved ones on a deeper level.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
