Beyond Boundaries: Discovering God’s Grace in Unexpected Places
Grace Prayed For
Humility: The centurion exemplifies humility in recognizing his unworthiness to have Jesus enter his home. Pray for the grace to cultivate this same humility, acknowledging your dependence on God and your need for His grace.
Scripture Passage
When Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,
“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully.”
He said to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion said in reply,
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof;
only say the word and my servant will be healed.
For I too am a man subject to authority,
with soldiers subject to me.
And I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come here,’ and he comes;
and to my slave, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.”
When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,
“Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith.
I say to you, many will come from the east and the west,
and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.”
Reflection
The Advent season is a time of expectant waiting, a time to prepare our hearts for the coming of the Savior. In this encounter between Jesus and the centurion, we find a powerful message about faith, humility, and the surprising reach of God’s grace.
The centurion, a Roman officer, approaches Jesus with a humble request. His servant is suffering, and he recognizes Jesus’ power to heal. But what strikes us is the depth of his faith. He doesn’t need Jesus to physically come to his home; he believes that Jesus’ word alone is enough to bring healing. “Only say the word,” he pleads, “and my servant will be healed.”
This unwavering faith, rooted in an understanding of authority and power, amazes even Jesus. The centurion recognizes Jesus’ true authority, not just as a healer, but as the Son of God. He understands that Jesus’ power transcends physical limitations and extends to all creation.
This encounter invites us to reflect on our own faith during this Advent season. Do we approach Jesus with the same humility and trust as the centurion? Do we believe in His power to heal, not just physical ailments, but the deeper wounds of our hearts and souls?
The centurion’s faith also reveals a beautiful truth about our Trinitarian God: His love and salvation are offered to all, regardless of their background or social standing. Jesus marvels at the centurion’s faith, declaring that many will come from the “east and the west” to join the heavenly banquet. This reminds us that God’s embrace is wide open, welcoming all who come to Him with humble and contrite hearts.
As we prepare for the coming of the Savior this Advent, let us:
- Cultivate a faith like the centurion’s: a faith that trusts in Jesus’ power and authority, even when we don’t fully understand.
- Approach Jesus with humility: recognizing our need for His healing and grace.
- Open our hearts to the universality of God’s love: remembering that His salvation is offered to all who believe.
This Advent, let us draw closer to our Trinitarian God, allowing His love to transform us and prepare us for the joyous celebration of His birth. May this reflection inspire us to deepen our faith, strengthen our hope, and open ourselves more fully to the amazing grace that awaits us in Christ.
Growing in Intimacy with Jesus
It calls us to compassionate service: The centurion’s concern for his servant reminds us that intimacy with Jesus is not just about personal devotion but also about extending His love and compassion to others. By serving those in need, we participate in Jesus’ healing ministry and deepen our connection with Him through acts of love and service.

Sharing
Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
