Ask and You Will Receive

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

John 16:24

Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

Grace Prayed For

Lord, teach us to pray boldly and specifically, trusting that you hear us and that your answers — whatever form they take — are always ordered toward our good.

Reflection

There is a gentle rebuke in this verse: Until now you have not asked. The disciples have been with Jesus for years. They have witnessed miracles. They have heard the Sermon on the Mount and the teaching on prayer. And apparently there is still something unrealized in their prayer life — some fullness of asking that they have not yet entered.

To ask ‘in my name’ is more than a formula appended to requests. In biblical thought, a name represents the person — their character, their authority, their presence. To ask in Jesus’s name is to ask as his representative, in alignment with his purposes, bringing requests that are consistent with who he is and what he is doing in the world.

This is both broadening and narrowing. It broadens because Jesus’s name is the name above all names — praying in that authority is praying with genuine power. It narrows because it invites us to examine whether what we are asking for is actually what Jesus would ask for. Praying in his name means allowing his character and purposes to shape and filter our requests.

The promise is complete joy. Not simply answered requests — though that is part of it — but a fullness of joy that comes from living in genuine relationship with the Father through Christ. Prayer is the medium of that relationship. Ask and you will receive is not a vending machine promise; it is an invitation into a living conversation that transforms the one who asks as much as it changes the circumstances asked about.

For your group: What have you been reluctant to bring to prayer? What request sits at the edge of your courage? Bring it today, in his name, with honesty and trust.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
