Sanctify Them in Truth

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

John 17:17-18

Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I sent them into the world.

Grace Prayed For

Lord, sanctify us by your truth. Let your Word do its quiet, penetrating work in us, reshaping us from the inside toward the holiness you intend.

Reflection

Sanctify them in truth. This prayer of Jesus reveals something essential about the nature of Christian holiness: it is not first of all a human achievement. It is an act of God performed on and in the disciple through the medium of truth — through the Word of God encountered, received, and lived.

The word ‘consecrate’ or ‘sanctify’ carries the sense of being set apart for a purpose, made holy by proximity to the Holy One. In the Old Testament, objects and people were sanctified by their dedication to God’s service. Jesus is asking the Father to perform this consecration on his disciples — not by removing them from the world, but by setting them apart within it.

And the instrument is truth. Your word is truth. The Scriptures, encountered prayerfully and honestly, do something to us over time. They are not merely information; they are formation. They show us ourselves as we are and as we can be. They introduce us to the God who is and disturb the gods we have created. They are, as Hebrews puts it, alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword.

Immediately, Jesus adds: As you sent me into the world, so I sent them. Sanctification is not for withdrawal. It is precisely for engagement — for being sent into the world as agents of the Kingdom, carrying within ourselves the truth that has shaped us.

This is the missionary heart of holiness: we are set apart not to be separate from the world but to be different within it, in a way that makes the love of God visible.

How is the Word of God currently forming you? Are you giving it the attentive time that transformation requires?

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
