Rest for the Weary

“For the Souls in Purgatory – Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord”

Matthew 11:28–30

Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.

Grace Prayed For

Lord, grant us the grace to lay down our burdens at your feet, to trust in your gentleness, and to find in you the rest our weary souls so deeply need.

Reflection

Come to me. Two simple words, and yet they carry the weight of the entire Gospel. Jesus does not say, “Fix yourself first” or “Earn your rest.” He says come — as you are, tired as you are, broken as you are. This invitation is not a reward for the strong. It is a lifeline thrown to the weary.

We all know what it is to labor under a heavy load. Some burdens are visible — illness, financial strain, grief, the relentless demands of caregiving or work. Others are invisible — shame, loneliness, anxiety, the quiet fear that we are never quite enough. Whatever form our burden takes, Jesus names it and meets it. He does not minimize our exhaustion. He offers us relief from it.

But notice what Jesus offers is not simply a nap or an escape. He offers a yoke — a new way of moving through life, joined to him. A yoke, by design, is shared. It means we are no longer pulling alone. And because the one who shares it with us is “meek and humble of heart,” we need not fear being driven harder than we can bear.

This is the paradox of Christian rest: it is not found in doing less, but in doing everything with Christ rather than apart from him. When we release our white-knuckled grip on control and lean into his presence, even the ordinary weight of the day becomes bearable — sometimes even light.

Today, let us practice that release. Let us come.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
