Theophany at the Jordan: Witnessing the Divinity of Christ

Scripture Passage

John 1:29-34

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.
He is the one of whom I said,
‘A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me
because he existed before me.’
I did not know him,
but the reason why I came baptizing with water
was that he might be made known to Israel.”
John testified further, saying,
“I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from the sky
and remain upon him.
I did not know him,
but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me,
‘On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain,
he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’
Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God.”

Grace Prayed For

Boldness to Testify: John boldly proclaims Jesus as the Son of God. Pray for the courage to share your faith with others, to testify to the truth of Christ’s love and salvation. Ask for the grace to be a witness to His presence in your life.

Reflection

Beloved in Christ,

Let us immerse ourselves in this profound encounter between John the Baptist and Jesus, drawing wisdom from the rich wellspring of Christian tradition. This passage from the Gospel of John unveils not only the identity of Jesus but also the very purpose of our existence.

Behold the Lamb of God:

John the Baptist, the voice crying out in the wilderness, proclaims Jesus as the “Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.” This evokes the ancient Passover sacrifice, where the lamb’s blood protected the Israelites from death. Jesus, the true Paschal Lamb, offers Himself as the ultimate sacrifice, liberating us from the slavery of sin and death.

He Who Ranks Before Me:

John acknowledges Jesus’ pre-existence, His eternal nature as the Logos, the Divine Word. This resonates with the Church’s understanding of Christ as the eternal Son, begotten of the Father before all ages. He is not merely a prophet or a teacher, but the very embodiment of God’s love and wisdom.

Baptism with Water and the Spirit:

John’s baptism with water was a preparation, a foreshadowing of the true baptism with the Holy Spirit that Jesus would bring. This baptism is not merely a symbolic ritual, but a transformative experience, an immersion in the divine life. It is through this baptism that we are truly united with Christ and become partakers of His divine nature.

The Descent of the Dove:

John witnesses the Holy Spirit descending upon Jesus “like a dove,” a symbol of peace, purity, and divine presence. This echoes the understanding of the Holy Trinity, where the Spirit proceeds from the Father and rests upon the Son. This divine dance of love is the source of all creation and the foundation of our salvation.

The Son of God:

John’s testimony culminates in the proclamation: “He is the Son of God.” This is not merely a statement of fact, but an invitation to enter into a relationship with the Divine. It is a call to recognize Jesus as our Lord and Savior, to surrender our lives to Him and to participate in His divine life.

An Invitation to Intimacy:

Beloved, this passage is not just a historical account, but a personal invitation to encounter the living Christ. It calls us to behold Him with the eyes of faith, to recognize His divinity, and to surrender to His loving embrace. It is through this intimate encounter that we are transformed and become true children of God.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen

Growing in Union with Jesus

Recognizing Jesus’ True Identity: John proclaims Jesus as the “Lamb of God,” highlighting His sacrificial role in taking away the sin of the world. This recognition moves beyond seeing Jesus as just a prophet or teacher. It acknowledges His divinity and His unique role in salvation. Embracing this truth lays the foundation for a deeper connection with Him.

Sharing

Jesus last words on Earth were to his disciples, can be found in Matthew Chap 28 when Jesus told his disciples, “Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

Jesus calls all of us to share in his redemptive mission here on Earth. I would ask you to share this Scripture reflection with your family, your friends and your acquaintances, and then share it with a couple of individuals that you may may not be comfortable sharing with, keeping in mind always the words of Jesus, And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
